The expo has grown since its inception in 2006 from a morning event attracting 400 patrons and featuring 20 exhibitors, to a full day event last year attracting 4000 patrons and 105 exhibitors. Glasshouse Country Sustainability and Garden Expo 2010 Sustainability under the spotlight at expo: If you are looking for practical, innovative ways of becoming more sustainable around the home and garden, then make sure you mark your calendar for the Glasshouse Country Sustainability & Garden Expo on Sunday May 23. With the theme increasing the focus on sustainability – ‘Sustainable Health for you – Your Garden – Your community’, visitors to the expo will be assured of picking up some valuable household, gardening & personal health tips. Sustainability will be under the spotlight at the expo: If you are looking for practical, innovative ways of becoming more sustainable around the home and garden, then make sure you mark your calendar for the Glasshouse Country Sustainability & Garden Expo on Sunday May 23, with the theme increasing the focus on sustainability – ‘Sustainable Health for you – Your Garden – Your community’, visitors to the expo will be assured of picking up some valuable household and gardening tips from our exhibitors as well as from our speaker at all of our workshops tom be held in the TSS Marquee.  The Rotary Club of The Glass House Mountains Inc, with our sponsor partners, intends to continue to grow this expo to be the largest event of its type in the region. This year’s theme is “Sustainable Health for You - Your Garden – Your Community”, and with the lifestyle exhibits will provide greater interest for all. If you are a business or part of a community group this is a great opportunity to make contact with the largest gathering of people in our region focusing on the things we need to know to enjoy living in the Glasshouse Country. We will also be conducting a gardening competition for gardeners and schools in the region, and will be encouraging visitors to stay in our region for the weekend by the promotion of other activities. There is an open invitation to business operators and community groups who may or may not be able to participate in this year’s event. Combined with our sustainability theme, there is plenty on offer at this year’s event, designed to cater for an even greater range of interests,” Bob said. In an another exciting new twist, visitors to this year’s event will also be encouraged to make a weekend of it, with travel packages currently being organized. “These packages will give visitors from outside the area the opportunity to take a closer look at some of our spectacular natural scenery and other local attractions, as well as check out our gardens which were entered in our garden competition & visit Australia Zoo,” Bob said. Glasshouse Country School Sustainability Competition 2010 This is a wonderful opportunity for all of the school in the Glasshouse Country to show off the sustainability skills of your school. The Rotary Club of the Glass House Mountains Inc., as organisers of the 2010 Glasshouse Country Sustainability and Garden Expo, invite your school to participate in the School Sustainability Competition. Schools may enter the competition in any of the four categories of LAND, WATER, ENERGY, AIR. Examples of sustainable practises which could be entered in the competition:
These categories are aligned with The Queensland Student Blueprint for Environmental Sustainability, written collaboratively by students from more than 70 schools across the state, in 2006. http://education.qld.gov.au/curriculum/learning/docs/earth-dialogues-blueprint.pdf To enter, schools need to choose one category, and a class or group of interested students. The students need to put together a display, providing information about what their school is achieving in their chosen category. This display is to be placed in the foyer of the Beerwah Library during the Expo. Students need to also talk to the judges about what has been achieved at their school. The closing date for the entry of your school display is Wednesday May 12, 2010, and the school will be contacted to arrange a time for students to talk with the judges. Winners will be announced at the Expo on May 23, 2010. This is an excellent opportunity for students to share with their community, the progress being made to make schools environmentally sustainable, and we encourage all schools to enter. There are great prizes to be won in each category, provided by the Community Recycling Inc. (Beerwah).
