Car Wrecker a Chip Off The Old Block

Self–confessed 22-year-old Queensland tomboy Belinda Povey loves wrecking cars.

But it would be helpful to explain that Belinda (“call me Bell”) is an auto parts recycler.

In fact she is a chip off the old block (engine block that is) because she works with her father Wayne, who owns the Beerwah Auto Centre on the Sunshine Coast.

Wayne, a Sydney-trained A Grade mechanic who turned 50 in 2007, carries out a range of repairs and provides a large stock of recycled parts with the emphasis on Subaru, Holden, Ford and Japanese. He has specialised in Subaru for 16 of his 21 years as a recycler.

The premises at 18 Free Street is bulging with dismantled vehicles because the pair have been busy since Wayne bought the Beerwah recycling firm six years ago.

Bell, an attractive blue-eyed 177 cm-tall brunette with a down-to-earth style, has been involved in the auto parts business with her dad for years, and loves to “pull cars to pieces”. The parts enthusiast, who rides dirt bikes in her spare time, drives a Nissan Skyline on which she has replaced the motor and carried out other repair work and is confident she can cope with any emergency breakdown. Footnote: According to the Auto Parts Recyclers Association of Australia, the industry handles the bulk of the 500,000 end-of-life vehicles which leave Australia’s road each year.
