SteepHillsHomeWasATallOrderSteep Hills Home Was a Tall Order“The most challenging project our firm has ever tackled,” was how Beerwah builder Chris Hall described a spectacular new home at Peachester. The long-established builder was appointed by the owners to carry out the work after Peachester steel frame designer and fabricator Barry Field prepared the plans for what was to become a three-level home on a steep sloping site. Barry needed all his experience of operating in the Range area for the past 28 years for the task. The sheer magnitude of the project was indicated by the amount of concrete - 100 cubic metres – used to support the home, including 55 cubic metres in a retaining wall. The normal amount for a standard home slab is 60 cubic metres. Barry Field’s integrated steel structure was the backbone of the job which ended up placing a family home, complete with entry area and two-car garage, on the top level, a fully self-contained living area on the second level (with its own space for vehicles) while the ground level enclosed two 22,500-litre rainwater tanks, air conditioning compressors, hot water service and other utilities. A team comprising engineers, concrete firms and other local trades played their part in the project, carried out for a Brisbane couple who wanted something special for a retirement home on their secluded 2.5-acre block on the Beerwah side of Peachester. Former public servant Barrie Ferguson and his wife Bev, who had held the block for 23 years, were delighted with the outcome. Kindly contributed to Beerwah.org by John Jennings - January 2008 |
